Here are my thoughts: I have been on Medium for some two months now and my experience with Illumination has been great! I make it a point to read and comment on as many posts as I can according to how I relate to them.

What I have noticed is that reciprocation is less as Vishnu's article pointed out. Yes, I have been fortunate to have some of the experienced writers on Medium take the time to engage with a new writer like me. But at the same time I have also observed that writers don't bother engaging with other writers who also happen to be avid readers on Medium. Perhaps they just want their writing to speak for themselves?
