On Medium, I think if you don't engage then I don't think it will reflect in the claps and comments because engagement is an important metric - however, I have noticed that high engagement does not necessarily translate into views - so that could mean only those engaging are reading - and high views doesn't mean everyone is reading - it could be external views that don't pay

So all in all, it's complicated.
