When I saw your title, I immediately recalled my grandmother who used ash for brushing teeth - it was the norm especially in the rural areas

Then toothpaste came and became all the rage - I doubt any one this gen use ash for brushing

I laughed at the part of Africa being hot and a lack of clothes was not the biggest problem - I guess western clothes was what identified the rich folks from the hoi polloi back in the day 🤷‍♀️
