It really does - sometimes parents say things thinking they are doing it for your own good or in order to motivate you to do better - the insane competitiveness in academics used to make my parents compare me to every kid and their bloody A grades - I mean I was a bookworm who wanted to do my reading /pursue something creative rather than get caught up in that sh*t -but yea, I did it to fulfill family expectations - beat 3000 others kids who wrote the university exams to come out top - haven't completely gotten over the severe anxiety and other health issues that came with that -
