It is interesting that in my home country, locals and tourists alike depend on asking for directions to get to a place rather than depend solely on devices - probably because in many areas there are no clear cut roads and the streets are not properly demarcated - I think ppl want to be helpful if they can but over here I would think twice before approaching someone for directions say IN NYC - their body language usually reads Stay Away - or Don't Approach!
