It is interesting that in my home country a lot of transactions are still done with cash - it was strange to handle bigger cash amounts than small change - I needed to get back to checking everything (once or twice I overpaid but the store owners graciously pointed it out to me) - and yes they do check the bill for the bigger amounts to see if it is counterfeit - I have seen some stores here do it as well for the $100 bills
