In my culture, it is all about prestige and gaining a spot in the pecking order so to speak - that means you have to live beyond your means, build fancy houses and name drop...not sure why but it is embedded in the toxic culture -

Take for example, someone close to me is a doc but he doesn't get along with his cousins because they are specialists and he's a physician - they drop hints that cardiology and ortho are much more loftier than being a GP - why? Isn't the goal the same - to heal? Apparently not.
