If you were to actually live in South Africa (not visit) you'd observe that it is not just the socio economic classes that eat different but also the different races that make up the population - maize meal and spinach was the standard fare where I was at along with braai - in Nigeria on the other hand meat was reserved for special occasion unless you belonged to a well to do family - otherwise it was pounded yam and some kind of stew

All simple fare but delicious
