I think they really don't know what else to say in such a situation especially if they have not been through something similar themselves - silence may be misconstrued so they fill it with something 'positive'

I've heard many times that I am strong (dealing with life situations and chronic pain) but I have never felt strong while going through them - it truly sucked...sigh
