I don't think it is wrong at all to have expectations - afterall we are human -

I am sorry your friends did not think to check in during the time you were traveling - they should have (I know we, your friends at Medium did) - but then again that is life and asking them will only put them on the defensive and lead to starined rt's (been there -know that)
