I didn't know public school education was free until I came to the US - elsewhere you have to pay for school and it can get expensive & sometimes even unaffordable because uniforms, textbooks and transportation can cost a lot

Probably because of that students are taught early on to work hard -

It's very competitive academically partly because of this reason
