How You Act and Speak When Nobody Else Is Listening

There’s a man I know — a friendly, likable guy who is a stay-at-home dad. He seems like a devoted husband to his high-powered attorney wife and three kids. But one day, what I overheard completely changed my opinion of him. He was screaming at his kids, using the foulest cuss words, all because they left the door open and the dog ran out.

I was shocked because that is not how he seemed in public. It just goes to show that no matter how polished someone may appear to you, their true character comes out when they think no one is watching.

Signs That Reveal True Character

  • How they talk about others

If someone constantly gossips about others, rest assured they’ll do the same about you. A neighbor bought a new car and we went to congratulate her. She was beaming with excitement, sharing details about her purchase. On the way out, someone who had been acting so friendly rolled her eyes and scoffed “For the way she was bragging, I at least expected a BMW X5.

  • How they treat family

When I started dating after divorce, I paid close attention to how potential partners treated their mothers, sisters and kids (if any). The way someone interacts with their family says a lot about their character.

  • How they treat service workers

A sense of entitlement often reveals itself in how people treat those in service roles. If a date were rude to the waitstaff, it would be our last date — impatience and a lack of kindness are big red flags.

  • How they handle anger

When we were moving to the new house, the previous occupants refused to leave on time. My ex immediately escalated the situation into a heated argument. That was the side of him I knew all too well — quick to anger, always ready for a fight.

  • How they view themselves

Recently, I saw a writer boasting about having more views than another. I found that laughable — considering how…
