I am so sorry about what your friend had to endure - could it be a psychological reaction to the bad after taste the experience left in your mind?

Unfortunately, it is the same here - if you are visiting and don't have adequate insurance, the bills can be atrocious if you do fall ill - someone I know refused to call an ambulance after falling off his bike because he would not have been able to pay the bills
