I was appalled while doing research for that article and there was a particular comment that blew me away where the person said why not give the 'dowry money' to the daughter to build her life? She needs an education and a career/business - marriage will come after and will be so much better if she's financially independent - and there's no guarentee whether she will get her money back in case of divorce

But then again I can judge sitting here but the Indian cultures and traditions are complex -
