allowed to partially encase your taste — 
you were a steel fortress built without haste,
as you looked over the towers
in sparkly eye-standing ovations
for the one that might see you
as something special,
something sort of particularly pretty,
someone who might be good to stick around with,
someone who won’t puncture a personality — 
but moons and midnights tend to have a certain glow,
the dark offsets the gloom glaring under the sunlight,
and all you saw were faces fading in reverse 
and eyes opening to another’s bloom,
singing a different verse.
