he sent me stems of crimson flowers
and poetry written on the edge 
of crumpled white paper,
wrapping velvet words in violets 
and lavender
after the charcoal clouds had wiped away
the edges of a slate blue sky. 
He already had my heart 
wrapped around his middle finger
and smashed my soul into the shallow of the east river. 
And he taught me the ways of broken love and life
before he chewed me up
and spit me out.
