As I grow older I have picked up on a few things ( am not a business consultant so this is a personal perspective) - ppl like to talk - they are not necessarily looking for advice or a solution - they just need a listening ear that is not quick to judge or criticize - I have a strict rule about gossiping - no he said she said for me - so that helps because I refuse to take the bait and take sides especially in interpersonal relationships -
